Most people will be familiar with Room Air Conditioners as they have been the type of system in use for the longest time. A Room Air Conditioner can be used in homes, shops, factories, sheds and a wide range of other applications. Generally, they plug into a standard 10-amp power point, and thus don't require any special wiring. (Some do - ask your sales representative for details). If installed in a window, they are transportable, and so can travel with you if you move house. They usually don't leave much evidence of a former installation, an important consideration if you are renting. They can also be installed in an opening cut in the wall, if you don't have a handy window opening you can use, although this tends to leave evidence of installation. One modern useful application of room air conditioners is that because they don't require holes cut if installed in a window opening, they can be installed in fibro homes without having to bother with the asbestos precautions now required by WorkCover. The main disadvantage is noise. There is only one unit, and so the noise from the motor occurs immediately behind the opening. A split-type system circumvents this problem by putting the motor outside where the noise will not be so easily transferred into the dwelling. |
